'We Must Demystify Oxford Admissions,' Writes Rare's Managing Director In The Guardian


Raph Mokades, Rare's MD, has written an opinion piece for The Guardian, in the wake of David Lammy MP’s release of FOI data showing disappointingly low Oxbridge acceptance rates for talented black and working-class students.

 

The problem should not, Raph writes, be perceived as something that Oxbridge can overcome simply by changing their admissions processes. "Some say elite universities should limit academic selection to boost social mobility. But is root-and-branch reform really necessary to ensure that access to Oxbridge is fair and merit-based? I would argue not."

Citing Rare's Target Oxbridge programme as an example, Raph places the responsibility for increasing successful Oxbridge applications from black students with several partners - schools, the universities and third party organisations - which must work together to overcome a complex set of challenges.
